Professor Jean Calleja-Agius graduated as a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Malta in 1999. She further specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, both locally and at University College London Hospital (UCLH). She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. She obtained her PhD at University College London (UCL). Professor Calleja-Agius has been lecturing medical students, trainee doctors and allied healthcare professionals on all aspects of reproductive sciences for over 25 years. She has numerous peer-reviewed research articles published in international high-impact journals.
She was the Head of the Department of Anatomy within the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Malta for nine years, and she is now focusing on international projects and collaborations. Among others, she was the chair for GYNOCARE, which is a Collaboration on Science and Technology (COST Action) responsible for establishing a European network for Gynaecological Rare Cancer Research: From Concept to Cure (www.gynocare.net). Her inspiration and determination are derived from her own parents, especially her mother, Phyllis, and all those mentors who supported her along the way. She herself is a wife and mother of a teenager, Amelie, and she strives to be a role model, especially for young girls.
